The effect of breeding experience on the laying date of Black Kites (Milvus migrans) was studied in SW Spain. The pairs with less than three years of breeding experience in the area laid later than more experienced birds. This breeding delay was related to the delayed arrival of less experienced birds to the breeding area, and to protracted nest building and pre-laying periods. These results were compared with a recent study about laying date in Spain of the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), that had a less variable laying date, probably due to its longer breeding cycle.
